Dancing through issues-
"Now you will get to dance" Youth Week Event
The Speak Out Dual Diagnosis program at Weave Youth & Community Services coordinated a series of dance workshops and a show stopping performance part of the Betty Makin Youth Awards on April 8th 2014.
Initial workshops involved a consultation process with local young people to identify key themes they wanted to represent through their dances. These included issues around suicide, bullying, drugs and alcohol. Separated into key groups young people were connected with professional choreographers that explored the themes further, and worked alongside young people developing a creative piece of expressive dance.
Overall it was fantastic to see such incredible participation, insight and engagement from young people who felt so passionately about these issues. “They really helped make the event special. It was so wonderful to see how proud they were with their performance and the audience absolutely enjoyed their dance and their messages reflecting the challenges facing young people today” (Suzanna Ng, City of Sydney).
Congratulations to all the young people involved, a special thank you to our choreographers- Charemaine Seet from Seet Dance, Fenix Icatu the street dance specialist and Char from Dance Central Sydney.
