Over 50 young Rockcorps volunteers rocked up on Wednesday 20 February to support Weave, a non-profit community organisation in Waterloo, by painting 300 flowerpots as part of a ‘Welcome to Green Square’ initiative by the City of Sydney to welcome new residents of the Green Square Development.

Fifty Rockcorps volunteers aged between 16 and 25 years got busy hand-painting pots with individual designs to help raise awareness of Weave with the new residents and earning a ticket to a rock concert in return.

“Weave works with disadvantaged and vulnerable young people, women and children in the City of Sydney area and we’re delighted to be a charity partner of Rockcorps.”

“It’s a great program and it’s fantastic to have young people donating their time and creativity to help promote a service that works with disadvantaged youth,” says Shane Brown, Weave’s Director.

Young people sign up to Rockcorps and give four hours of their time to a charity of their choice. In return they receive tickets to rock star performances. In this case Guy Sebastian is the star of choice.

The pot painting venture also highlighted Weave’s partnership with Green Square Growers who will take on the next leg of the pots’ journey, organising potting mix, indigenous plant and/or edible seedlings and providing growing and placement tips.

“We’re sure that the residents of the new Green Square development will be delighted to find individual hand painted flowerpots in their Welcome Packs,” says Shane, “and when they find out they were part of a wonderful partnership with Green Square Growers and created by young people to help support young people I’m sure that will add even more to the delight.”
