Middle Year Program - Volunteers Wanted to Support Program Activities

The Middle Years Program operates across Waterloo, Marrickville and Glebe on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays respectively during school terms.

On Wednesdays, up to ten children aged between 7 and 13 years are picked up from schools in the Waterloo and Redfern areas and given a healthy afternoon tea prior to their participating in an activity program.  Programs include learning to swim, film-making, cooking, skateboarding.  After the program the children are taken home.  The children get to attend up to two terms of programs. Schools and parents refer the children to the program.

On Thursdays, Weave partners with the City of Sydney and runs a program similar to the one provided on Wednesdays but children who attend are from the Glebe area.

On Fridays, the program is slightly different.  It is a drop-in program that operates with Glebe Youth Services commencing at 6pm and finishing at 9pm.  Children, young people and families attending the Friday program, known as the After Dark Program, can be dropped home by the Streetbeat Bus.  Programs delivered on Friday nights include sports, skateboarding and screen printing.  There can be up to 100 people who drop in to the After Dark Program.

Adventure Camps

Every school holidays a four-day camp is held to which up to ten children aged between 10 and 14 years are invited.  Camps are held in varying locations outside of Sydney.  Children who attend the camps typically have attended one of the after school programs.

Across the after-school programs and the adventure camps around 70 to 80 percent of the children attending are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people.

Volunteers are needed to support staff in the delivery of the after school program as well as the adventure camps.

Ideally, volunteers would be willing to be engaged with the Middle Years Program over a longer period of time, bring skills and energy to the program, and have a real commitment to the children.  Volunteers may be interested in engaging with some or all of one of the after school programs, say for a term, and/or assisting with one of the camps.  Weave would welcome support and is happy to discuss options that work for both the volunteer and the program.

All volunteers for the Middle Years program are required to attend a half-day induction.
